Websites for Small Businesses

Need a website for your small business?

I can build for you a beautiful, fast-loading website that looks great on all devices and is built to impress your potential customers, optimised for search engines and focused on turning visitors into prospects.

To help you rank in Google, I implement basic SEO principles as a standard.

It’s not about you, it’s about them

Have you ever used a website and become frustrated because you can’t find the information you were looking for? Same here. That’s why usability is so important to them – your visitors.

Fancy menus and full-screen videos have their place, but most people using the internet (ie your customers) want instant results. They don’t want to play Hunt The Menu or wait for a video to load. They want to find out about your business, they want your phone number and they want to see if your services are affordable.

So that’s why I create fast-loading, user-friendly websites that look great and work well on all devices.

Customised for your business

When it comes to business websites, there is no “one size fits all” option. Everyone has their own set of requirements, which will include some or all of the items listed here:

  • Sales pages
  • Contact forms
  • Newsletter subscription form
  • Pricing tables
  • Social sharing buttons
  • Stock or in-house photography
  • Portfolio pages
  • Basic SEO
  • Blog (you will be blogging, won’t you?)

To work out a price for your project, I need to ask lots of questions and you need to provide thorough answers. And no, a rough sketch on the back of an envelope isn’t enough for me to create your ideal website.

The first step of the process is for you to get in touch. After that, if we’re a good match, we’ll arrange a face-to-face meeting or discuss your ideas over the phone, Zoom or whatever. If everything goes well, we’ll start talking about financials.

Frequently asked questions

What software do you use to build websites and blogs?

I only ever use WordPress.

How long does it take to complete the work?

The only answer to this question is ‘it depends’. There are lots of factors at play, which include the size of the site, creating the content, creating or finding appropriate images and videos and your level of cooperation when it comes to supplying the things I need to complete the job. Building the site is usually a fairly quick process, it’s the collecting of materials that can take a while.

Are there likely to be any additional or ongoing costs?

There definitely will be for your domain name and hosting. And I always recommend taking out a monthly maintenance plan which covers backing up your site and keeping all the software up to date. This ensures the site works to its full potential and reduces the chances of it getting hacked. There may also be annual renewal costs for plugins – but they wouldn’t come as a surprise as we’d talk about them during the build and development process. I’d only use them if you agree.

What are the terms regarding payment?

I won’t start work until you’ve paid a 50% deposit. Depending on the size of the project, there may be incremental payments when certain pre-agreed milestones are reached. The final payment becomes due just before launch and when you’re happy with everything. All the details will be laid out in writing beforehand.

Can you help with hosting?

I can help with hosting. I don’t provide hosting as a service but I’m more than happy to take care of setting it up with my preferred provider. That’s a company called Guru.

To do the work, what do you need from me?

Unless agreed otherwise, you’ll need to provide all the written content, images and videos for your site. However, I can source or create these materials for you. This is something we’d discuss during our discovery call(s).
